Shot List

This is a shot list which Katie and I started together and discussed. However Katie finished it at home. It explains clearly what we are going to do and how we are going to do it.

This is the new shot list. We have improved due to audience feedback.

Story board

This is the story board we did and took to the filming scenes. However we are preparing to make changes according to the surroundings and props gathered.

Update: Due to us using a different shop as we needed more footage, we used the storyboard in a different order.

This is the updated storyboard.

Font Notes

Katie researched different fonts for us to use. We was looking for a handwritten title because this would fit in well with the genre of teen. Looking for ages, we found many that had the potential however some were just un readable. Another reason is that some looked to childish and considering we are doing a teen film we didn't feel it would suit are target audience.
We looked for different fonts, for different aspects of the title sequence like the actors names and there roles.
For the roles, Katie and I chose 'Orator STD' because this is really basic but looks professional.
For the names, we chose 'Freestyle script' which looked elegant and readable whilst offering a professional look.
And for the main title, we chose 'Segoe print' which looks good for a teen comedy.

Institution Notes:

Me and Katie both had the task to make our own distribution or production company. Me doing the distribution while Katie did the production. I feel we did this very well capturing our target audiences very well with appropriate company names and images. Usually big name films or directors would have large companies like 20th century. However we are an independent film so we made our own. This is also because we are a low budget film.

This is my company. Our film is based in Cornwall so I thought it would make sense that the logo included the Cornish flag as most of our target audience will be Cornish. The name is 'Kernow Distribution' which also target the Cornish audience. The image is not still. It contains a moving image in the background of waves. This is because Cornwall is know for beaches.

This is a company logo produced by Katie. Her last name is Price which is included in the Production name. This is to make it unique to her. The font used also makes it unique to her as its in a hand writing kind of form.

Initial Film Ideas

Overview of the film opening:

The values that are shown in our opening is

People in our opening will be represented in a happy way. The one person we show clearly shows she's happy as you see her about to do something she loves which is surfing.

Our three draft title ideas:
  • Brooklyn Ash
  • Surfing, School and so much drama
  • Mean Teens

The two highlighted got the same amount of votes on my survey. However, I looked at my friend's
( Katie ) survey and Surfing, School and so much drama got the most votes so this is what we are going for. We were happy this won as we know it is catchy

UPDATE:
We felt that 'surfing, school and so much drama' is too long. So we have shortened it to still have the same meaning but it will be more catchy and simpler. It is now called 'Surf School'

Font Styles:

The positioning of our titles will be in the middle of the screen as this is where it will get the most attention.
Katie and I decided on a hand wrote title. This is because it would give it a more personal look. We also feel it will appeal more to the audience. For the titles, we chose 'orator SD' as this looked professional and was a clear read.

Shooting And Lighting Tips

We have chose to film most of the beach. Why filming there, we will have to take things in to consideration. Such as ;

The Sun: The beach is very open so exposure from bright sun is kind of inevitable however, the weather we have in this season will not bring us much sun which is good in that the actors won't be blinded but that might make the film not feel authentic by going to the beach in freezing temperatures.

The wind: At the beach, the wind will cause many troubles. For one, the actors hair will be going everywhere meaning we may have to film in short bursts. Another problem is the sound, the mic will struggle to pick up the actors voices. This is why we have opted to try not use speech when at the beach.

People: The beach is a very popular destination, maybe not in this season but there are still customers. This will be a problem if they are in the way. A way to avoid this is to ask nicely if they could move.

Inside the surf shop: When inside the surf shop, there will be lights from above which could potentially mess with the camera lighting. We could also bump into people which could potentially mess up a long take. To avoid the lighting issue, you could bring you own film safe lights. This way you can still see and you won't get the ripple kind of effect on the footage.

Idents And Graphic Research

Idents appear at the start of the films. They appear in a .....way.
The length of common idents are roughly about 15-20 seconds long. The timing of the idents all depend really on how popular the company is. I noticed the more popular companies like 20th century and marvel give a longer production. This may be because of how rich the company is or it could be that they use this as a selling point to promoted the business in popular films.

Sub Genre Conventions

Teen Comedy:

Narrative and Representations:
For the plot of a teen comedy, I think they are set manly in a school or places of social gatherings so it can be relatable to the audience making the jokes funnier. In comedies, the camera work is mostly naturalistic and it is filmed in a way where no one is shown to be more superior than other.

Media Language:(camerawork, editing, mise-en-scene, graphics)
  • Close ups
  • Medium Close ups
  • Continuity editing
Because our film is about surfing and school, we would include school equipment and surf equipment in the mise en scene.

Music and Sound notes:
In teen films, the sound is most likely going to be the top of the pops songs as we are focusing on a female teen comedy. However we do not want to completely exclude males so we will have songs of both genders popularity.

Survey Monkey

This is the survey monkey I made. I started by asking basic questions about the person themselves as this would give me a better understanding of who are target audience is. We already had an understanding of what are target audience would be but this would be a way of making sure our research was correct. I posted this on my social media as i knew i would get a response from a good handful of people.

TA Survey and Profile

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GFDV5LV
1.
For film, identifying your target audience is quite difficult. However a way of doing so is by looking in a local newspaper with has the same subject or genre as you film. This would mean that the people have the same interests as your film meaning they are your target audience.

2.
Scary Movie:
Scary Movie is a spoof of most horror movies going. But it was manly based on 'Scream' and 'I know what you did last summer'.
The audiences age for 18-30. I think it is this big an age gap because it is based on films based in the 90's however contains humour that would be funny to the age group. I think it is manly aimed at males because it contains gore. This is more based on the stereotypical male more than the female. It was filmed in the United States.

Not another teen movie:
I feel that this movie would have a close target audience to 'Scary Movie'. The audience profiles age for this film would 15-24. I feel it is this age because it is funnier then scary movie but doesn't contain any gore. This saying, I still think that it would attract more males then females as the story is based more on a male trying to grab the attention of a female. The film again was made in the United states of America.

3.

4.
Demographic
The target audience for our teen comedy film is aimed at the ages of 13-18 years of age. Most of our audience will be females. Our main character is a white female so we are aiming are film towards white teens. The filming will take place in Cornwall so are target audience will mostly be based in Cornwall. In Cornwall, they white population is 95.7% of the whole Cornish population. This is the reason it is manly aimed at white British. Cornwall aswell is a very poor part of Britain.
Physiographic:
Our main character in our movie, is someone who is aspiring to become popular. So is someone who thinks that if she isn't popular then she has no friends. She is someone desperately wanting to be accepted by her peers and the people around her. Also, with her name, she wants a power image which is wanted by her peer friendship group. And wanting a status which sees her as a popular person in her school.

Demographic: demographics is the study population based on factors such as age, race and sex, among others. Governments, corporations and non-government organizations use demographics to learn more about a population's characteristics for many purposes, including policy development and economic market research.

Physiographic: Psychographics is the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Because this area of research focuses on interests, attitudes, and opinions, psychographic factors are also called IAO variables.

The of the major differences between major film and independent film is the budget. Major film will have a higher profile cast compared independent because they have a higher budget. Budget affects everything as it really determines the access of talents. Some actors may choose money over genre. If your cast is weak then the marketability of the film which affects foreign sales and numbers of screens that the exhibitors are willing to allocate.

Did you know Paranormal Activity was made for $15,000. It is an independent film and I was successful. So it is not always money but money is key in making a professional film.

Film distributers are responsible for the marketing of a film. It is different from the production company. Distribution deals are an important part of financing a film. They also set the release date.
